Physical Education Overview

Terms 1-3: Sport and society: Emergence of the globalisation of sport in the twenty first century

Students will learn about sporting recreation in the pre-industrial society compared to post-industrial society. Students will study the impact on sport of various socio-cultural factors such as urbanisation, transport and communication. They will learn about the impact of sport on post World War II society through to the present day, particularly in relation to association football, tennis and athletics

Students will complete an end of topic assessment comprised of short and longer answer exam questions

Develop the individual:

Students will develop an appreciation of factors which have influenced sport throughout history. Students will learn that sport is a reflection of features of society.

Terms 1-3: Anatomy and Physiolo: The cardiovascular system

Students will learn about how the cardiovascular (heart and blood) and respiratory (lungs) systems work together and how changes within these systems prior to exercise, during exercise of differing intensities and during recovery, allow the body to meet the demands of exercise.

Students will complete an end of topic assessment comprised of short and longer answer exam questions

Develop the individual:

Students have the opportunity to learn how exercise can influence their healthy active lifestyles.

Students are challenged to increase their personal fitness levels and to understand the benefits to this both for an individual and also society as a whole

Terms 1-3: Skill acquisition: Skill characteristics and their impact on transfer and practice

Students will gain insight into the characteristics of skilled performance including help identifying the different types of skill. They will explore at how skills performance can be refined via practice.

Students will complete an end of topic assessment comprised of short and longer answer exam questions

Develop the individual:

Students will defer to their own experiences when reviewing classifications to think of examples to illustrate the criteria for the different types of skill.

Terms 4-6: Anatomy and Physiolo: Diet and nutrition and physical training

Students will learn about the seven classes of food that should be present in all sports performers' diets and also explore positive and negative effects of supplements. Students will then study the principles of training, periodisation and training methods.

Students will complete an end of topic assessment comprised of short and longer answer exam questions

Develop the individual:

Students will learn about how nutrition and diet contribute to successful performance and how what you eat can have an effect on health, weight and activity levels. Students will learn how as athletes to plan their training year to optimise performance.

Create a supportive community:

Students will learn that what we eat can also determine our mental well being and as a result our social well-being and ability to cooperate and collaborate with others.

Terms 4-6: Skill acquisition: Psychological influences on the individual and team

Students will explore the psychological theories and concepts that help to explain the topics of personality, attitudes and arousal levels and how these impact on performance. They will discuss strategies that can be used to overcome the negative effects.

Students will complete an end of topic assessment comprised of short and longer answer exam questions.

Develop the individual:

Students will gain an understanding of use of anxiety measures and types of motivation that can be used to increase effort and task persistence - primarily as a performer but this can be applied outside of sport.

Create a supportive community:

Students will learn about the changing dynamics of groups and discover strategies to prevent negative psychological influences that could hinder team performance.

Terms 4-6: Sport and society: The impact of sport on society and of society on sport

Students will study a number of key terms in sport and their impact on equal opportunities in sport and society. Students will learn about the barriers to participation in sport and physical activity and explore possible solutions to overcome these for under-represented groups. Students will learn about the inter-relationship between Sport England, local and national partners to increase participation at grassroots level.

Students will explore how social processes (social control/social change), social processes (causes and consequences of inequality) and social stratification impact on equal opportunities
